1/28/09 - The operators of a Georgia peanut butter plant and an Ohio distributor were negligent in the death of a 72-year-old woman, says a lawsuit filed by family members. In the lawsuit, relatives of Shirley Mae Almer claim that she died as a result of a nationwide salmonella outbreak that has been linked to the Peanut Corp. of America and distributor King Nut. 1/23/09 - A new federal law to prevent swimmers from being injured or killed by underwater drains has many pool operators struggling to comply. Under the 2007 Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, pool operators must install new compliant drain covers designed to reduce the chance of swimmers becoming trapped against the drain. 1/23/09 - The operators of an amusement park where a teenager was killed have agreed to pay $1 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the girl´s parents. An investigation determined that ride operator Air Glory Inc. failed to properly attach safety harnesses to the girl before she fell 50 feet from a free-fall ride called the "Giant Swing." The settlement will be paid by Air Glory´s insurer, an attorney for the family of the girl said. Kellogg Crackers Test Positive for Salmonella

1/19/09 - According to the FDA and Kellogg, Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter, which had already been recalled, tested positive for salmonella. The crackers are the first consumer product to test positive in the growing outbreak linked to peanut butter and peanut paste manufactured by Peanut Corp. of America. Since the outbreak began, 474 people have reported being sickened and 6 people have died, but those numbers are believed to be lower than the actual number of cases. Study: Antipsychotics Linked to Heart Problems

People taking popular antipsychotic drugs produced by Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson and others were twice as likely to suffer heart attacks, a new study has found. According to the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the drugs are no safer than older drugs for treating diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Among the drugs included in the study were Eli Lilly & Co´s Zyprexa and Johnson & Johnson´s Risperdal.
