In 2008, there were a total of 119,588 auto accidents reported across the state of Arizona. There were a total of 842 fatalities, and 37,180 injuries. There were a total of 81,566 accidents that involved property damage only, meaning there was only one vehicle involved. Of the total accidents, 23,113 took place in rural areas and 96,475 took place in urban areas making these areas a danger to drive in. There were a total of 6,757 alcohol related accidents reported, and 1,524 pedestrians were involved in accidents that were reported. There were also a total of 3,531 motorcycle involved accidents reported, and a total of 95,427 accidents that involved more than one vehicle.

 

Of all fatal accidents reported in 2008 across the state, Arizona seen 294 alcohol related deaths, 391 in urban areas and 451 in rural areas. There were 499 deaths due to alcohol in single vehicle accidents, 343 in multiple vehicle accidents and a total of 842 alcohol related deaths. The worst month for all vehicle crashes was February, and the worst day of the week for crashes was Fridays. The worst times to be on the road is from 4 to 5pm daily. The worst month for fatalities was March, and the worst day for fatalities was Saturdays for the year of 2008. The worst hours to be on the road was between 5 and 6pm. The most common auto accident was a rear end collision, and the manner of collision in fatalities was angle accidents. The most harmful events other than a collision with another vehicle is with a stationary object. The most common violation drivers took part in was speeds higher than recommended for road or weather conditions, and this attributed to many vehicle accidents. Of all the accidents reported for the year of 2008, there were a total of 5,330 or almost 10% that were incapacitating injuries, with non-incapacitating injuries numbering almost 20,000.

 

Between 2007 and 2008, there was a decrease of almost 16% in overall accidents, and a decrease of almost 13% of fatalities reported. Alcohol related fatalities and injuries decreased as well as pedestrian fatalities.
